How ring sizes work

Choosing the right ring size saves you a resize later and makes the ring comfortable and secure on your finger.
Sizing systems
Shops use different sizing systems; some use numbers, some letters, and many rely on the finger's circumference in millimetres.
What matters is not the system's name but that the jeweller measures your finger with their standard sizing rings.
If you buy elsewhere, give the circumference or inner diameter in millimetres to avoid confusion.
Size can also differ between the right and left hand, and between fingers on the same hand, so measure the finger the ring will go on.
When to measure
Finger size changes during the day: smaller in the morning and in cold weather, larger in the evening and in heat.
It is best to measure around midday when your hands are in their usual state.
Measure more than once if you can, and make sure the ring slides over the knuckle with slight pressure and does not slip off easily.
If your knuckle is much wider than the base of your finger, choose a size that passes over it and ask the jeweller about ways to stop the ring from spinning.

A wide band feels tighter than a thin one of the same size because it covers more of the finger.
So you may need a slightly larger size for wide wedding bands and broad rings.
Always try a sizing ring with a width close to the ring you plan to buy.
A ring that is flat inside may also need a slightly different size from one that is curved inside, known as a comfort fit.
If the ring is a gift
You can take a ring the person already wears on the same finger and have the jeweller measure it.
If you are unsure, choose a slightly larger size, since making a ring smaller is usually easier than making it bigger.
And ask the shop in advance whether resizing after purchase is possible and what it costs.
Printed paper sizers only give a rough idea, and measuring at the shop remains more accurate.
