Cleaning gold at home safely

Gold loses its shine with daily wear because of sweat, oils and dust, and you can bring the sparkle back at home with simple, safe methods.

The basic method: warm water and mild soap

Place the piece in a bowl of warm water with a little mild dish soap and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes.

Then brush it gently with a very soft toothbrush, especially in corners and between links.

Rinse it with clean warm water and dry it with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Avoid very hot water, since a sudden change in temperature can harm some of the stones set in the piece.

What to avoid

Do not use chlorine, bleach or harsh bathroom cleaners, as they can damage the alloy and weaken solder joints over time.

Avoid toothpaste, gritty baking soda and stiff brushes because they leave fine scratches on the surface.

And never clean a piece over an open sink, so it does not slip down the drain.

Also avoid home ultrasonic cleaners unless you are sure the piece and its stones can handle them.

Pieces set with stones

Pieces with stones or pearls need extra care, since some stones react to water, soap or heat.

Pearls and soft stones only need a wipe with a damp cloth, with no soaking.

If the piece is valuable or stone-set, ask your jeweller about the right method before cleaning it.

Hard stones such as diamonds usually tolerate soap and water, but glue or settings can loosen with long soaking.

A gentle clean every few weeks is usually enough and reduces the need for heavy polishing.
