How to read a gold invoice line by line

A gold invoice is not a formality, it is an exact summary of what you paid and what you own, and understanding every line protects you when you later sell or exchange.

Shop details and date

At the top of the invoice you will find the shop name, its address and its commercial or tax registration number if there is one, together with the purchase date and the invoice number.

Make sure these details are clear and printed or written legibly, because they are what proves where the piece came from if you ever need it.

If the shop has branches, check which branch you bought from, since some shops require selling or exchanging at that same branch.

Item description, karat and weight

This line should state the type of piece, such as a ring, chain or bangle, then the karat, such as 21 or 18, then the weight in grams, usually with two decimals, for example 7.35 g.

If the piece has stones, ask whether their weight is counted as gold or deducted, and ask for this to be written explicitly.

Price per gram and workmanship

A good invoice separates the gold price per gram at the time of purchase from the workmanship charge, whether that charge is per gram or a fixed amount for the whole piece.

This matters because when a shop buys the piece back from you it usually pays for the gold only, not the workmanship, so you know from day one which part of the price you may not get back.

If workmanship is merged with the gold price into a single figure, ask the seller to split them in front of you before the final invoice is issued.

Tax, total and signature

A tax or other fees may appear depending on the laws of your country, so ask about any line you do not understand before you pay.

Check that the total equals the weight multiplied by the price per gram plus workmanship and fees, make sure the shop stamp or signature is there, then keep the invoice somewhere safe with a photo of it on your phone.
