Can you negotiate workmanship, and how

The gold price per gram is mostly set by the market, while workmanship is the part where a shop often has more room to move.

Why workmanship can be negotiated

Workmanship covers the manufacturing cost and the shop's profit, and it varies from shop to shop even for the very same piece.

That is why many traders accept a reasonable reduction, especially for a serious buyer or a large purchase by weight.

It helps to know the typical workmanship for the type of piece you want, so you can tell whether the figure you are quoted is high or reasonable.

When your chances are better

Your chances improve when you buy several pieces or a large weight, when you are a known customer, or at quiet times when the shop is not crowded.

Unique, imported or high demand pieces may have less flexibility, especially during wedding and holiday seasons.

Paying in cash may sometimes give you a better chance too, but ask about it rather than assume it.

How to negotiate politely

First ask clearly what the workmanship is, per gram or for the piece, then calmly mention that you have compared several shops.

Ask for a specific discount rather than a vague one, and offer to complete the purchase right away if the shop reaches a suitable figure, as this encourages the trader to agree.

If the shop does not agree, it is fine to thank them and leave calmly, as they may offer a better price before you go or on a later visit.

What not to do

Do not push too hard on the gram price itself, as it is tied to the market price and its margin is usually thin.

And never accept a lower workmanship charge in exchange for giving up a detailed invoice or the stated karat and weight, because the invoice matters more than any discount.

Remember that negotiating is not a fight, and a good relationship with an honest shop can help you later with repairs, exchanges and selling.
