Storing jewelry so it lasts

How you store your jewelry matters as much as how you wear it, because proper storage protects it from scratches, tangles and dullness.
Keep each piece separate
Gold is a relatively soft metal, and pieces rubbing together leave scratches over time.
It is best to keep each piece in a small fabric pouch or in its own compartment inside a lined box.
Hard stones such as diamonds can scratch gold and other stones if they are stored together.
Boxes lined with soft fabric or velvet protect the surface better than bare wooden or plastic boxes.
Chains and bracelets
Fine chains tangle easily and are hard to undo without damage.
Fasten the clasp before storing, and you can hang chains on a special stand or thread them through a drinking straw before boxing them.
Lay bracelets flat or gently coiled, and never squeeze them into a tight space.
If a chain tangles, do not pull it hard; undo it calmly with a fine needle on a flat surface, or ask your jeweller for help.

Choose a dry spot away from heat and direct sunlight, since humidity speeds up tarnish on silver and some alloys.
The bathroom is a poor storage place because of steam and cleaning products.
A small moisture-absorbing sachet inside the box adds extra protection.
Also avoid keeping jewelry near windows or heat sources such as electrical appliances, as heat can affect some stones.
Pearls and delicate pieces
Pearls need some air, so do not keep them sealed in a plastic bag for long periods.
Lay them flat in soft fabric away from metal pieces.
For valuable pieces you rarely wear, consider a secure locked place, and ask your jeweller about any special care they need.
It also helps to keep a simple list of your pieces with photos and invoices, stored separately from the jewelry itself.
