Workmanship and hallmarks: what you pay above the gram price
15 October 2026 • 1 دقائق قراءة
A piece costs its weight times the karat gram price, plus workmanship, and sometimes tax or hallmark fees
What workmanship is
Workmanship is the fee for making and designing the piece, usually a fixed amount per gram and sometimes one amount for the whole piece
Two pieces of the same weight and karat can cost differently because finer or handmade designs carry higher workmanship
Work the price out yourself
Multiply the weight by today's karat gram price, then add workmanship times the weight when it is per gram
Example: a 5 g 21K ring at 6,000 per gram with 150 per gram workmanship costs 5 × 6,150, that is 30,750

The hallmark is a small stamp from your country's official body that proves the real karat
Always ask for a hallmarked piece and an invoice that states weight, karat and workmanship, it protects you when you sell or exchange
Do you get workmanship back when selling
Usually not, shops buy used pieces by weight and karat only, which is why bars and coins with low workmanship suit saving better
